Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone train Jiu Jitsu?

Our belief is yes. Jiu Jitsu is a personal journey, one in which your only goal is to improve on the day before. For some that means testing themselves in competition, but for others it can be as simple as getting up off the ground more easily, or making it through the day with a little less anxiety. You set your goals and we help you meet them.

If we seem overly optimistic, it is because we have all changed our lives for the better with Jiu Jitsu. Many of us have conquered lifelong demons to become better versions of ourselves. Because we know that is the power Jiu Jitsu has, the power to heal and change us, we want to share it with everyone.

Do I need to get in shape before I start?

The short answer is no. Jiu Jitsu will get you in shape.

It is amazing how much exercise you get while enjoying the training and learning new techniques. You will gain lean muscle mass, lose body fat, gain flexibility and mobility, and see cardiovascular improvement, all while learning how to defend yourself.

And let us not forget mental health. The challenges we face on the mat help prepare us for the daily struggles of life. Jiu Jitsu is a total mental and physical workout that improves your daily life.

How do I get started as a brand new student?

It starts with a free one-on-one intro lesson. Call us at 608-241-9007, email [email protected], or send us a message through the contact page and we will get you scheduled.

From there, new adult students begin with three private lessons taught by a certified instructor. Those lessons prepare you for our Fundamentals group classes, where you learn the basic positions, techniques, submissions, and escapes in a controlled, safe, and friendly environment.

The Fundamentals program is designed for anyone, male or female, of any body type, fitness level, or age 14 and older. No experience is needed and you do not need your own gi to start.

What are the risks of injury in Jiu Jitsu?

Safety is imperative in our academy. We do not believe that being injured while training should be normalized. You will see people joking online about their BJJ injuries, but that is usually the result of a poor training environment and a lack of proper culture and etiquette.

We believe students should be taught how to train safely and properly so that Jiu Jitsu can be a lifelong enjoyment. Learning how to look after yourself and your training partner, respecting the rules, and letting go of your ego are all important parts of longevity in Jiu Jitsu. Our instructors pay close attention and work hard to maintain a safe training environment.

How long does it take to earn belts in Jiu Jitsu?

There are two separate belt systems, one for kids and one for adults.

The kids belt system runs from white belt to green belt and ends the year the child turns 16. Anyone 16 or older holding a rank in the kids program is then promoted to the first adult belt, blue belt. Kids ranking is based on a mix of class attendance, skill development, and meeting all belt testing requirements.

Adults have five belts, starting at white belt and progressing through black belt. It often takes many years to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 8 to 10 years on average. Belts are awarded based on class attendance, mastery of technique and concepts, knowledge of Jiu Jitsu and Alliance team history, and a basic understanding of the point system and rules.

What ages do you teach?

Our Youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is for ages 5 to 12. Kids learn basic Jiu Jitsu movements, self defense, and overall body awareness, with an emphasis on listening skills, coordination, motor skills, flexibility, and agility. Non-violent resolution is always encouraged.

Our adult Fundamentals program is open to anyone age 14 and older, of any body type or fitness level.
